Types of robbery

Most cases of robbery fall into three categories:

  • Street robbery (mugging) - items such as mobile phones and other personal belongings are typically stolen during a street robbery. This crime is often committed by low level criminals and youths.
  • Small business robbery - businesses such as petrol stations are often targets for this crime. Criminals aim to steal money and goods such as cigarettes.
  • Commercial robbery - commercial robbery is usually committed by organised criminals who typically target banks and security vans.

What penalties are given for robbery charges?

The penalties for robbery are dependant upon the circumstances of the crime. The crime is classified into one of three levels which indicate the seriousness of your case.

  • Level 1: Robbery using minimal force
  • Level 2: Robbery using a weapon
  • Level 3: Robbery using a weapon, a lot of force and/or causing serious injury

The guidelines set out by The Sentencing Council in 2016 also make a distinction between robberies carried out using knives and firearms as opposed to other weapons.

Other factors are also taken into account upon sentencing, including:

  • If a disguise was used
  • If the victim was vulnerable
  • The number of people involved in the crime
  • The value of property taken
  • When the offence took place
  • Your role in the robbery

Robbery cases are typically taken to Crown Court, where you will be sentenced should you be found guilty. Sentences range from heavy fines to life imprisonment, although imprisonment of four to five years is commonplace. It is therefore important to gain expert advice from legal professionals as soon as possible.
